On 26 Feb 1849, William was convicted of "Larceny by servant" at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) in London. He stole 1lb of butter, value 10.5d (equivalent of £2.44 in today's money), from his master Henry James Brown. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 1 month in prison.
William's photo was taken by Joseph Jacklett who was a successful photographer in Aldershot between 1875 and his death in 1892. The photograph is a black and white photo that has been coloured with paint.
