Arthur worked as a farm servant for a farmer Edward Harris at Tymawr, Bwlch, South Wales. In 1888 he was presented with a bible from W. Haggart.
Joined the Gordon Highlanders in 1891 and received the following medals: Tirah 1897-98, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Relief of Chitral for the Indian Campaigns, Defence of Ladysmith, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.
Travelled back from Cape Town to England with his wife and daughter on the SS Wilcannia, arriving in London on 1 Jul 1907. Then he travelled alone from Liverpool to Montreal on the SS Kensington arriving on the 3 Nov 1907, while his wife and daughter stayed with relatives. He returned to England on the SS Virginian, arriving in Liverpool on 11 Jul 1908.
Was a Freemason in the Transvaal.
