Welcome Page Help Name List Locations Map - all Boramans

Some of the facilities on the web pages don't seem to work?

It is probably because you have Javascript disabled in your browser. Javascript is used for many facilities eg expansion of Occupation details, display of maps etc. You need to enable Javascript in your browser and try again. It's quite safe to do so on this website - trust me, I'm a Boraman!

How do I search for something?

Enter the search text into the box at the top right of the screen. Either hit Return or click on the 'go' button.

The individuals that match the search text will be listed, together with the birth, death and marriage details, that should allow you to pick out the entry or entries of interest. Clicking on the person's name will display the individual's detail page.

The search matches on the name, birth date/place, death date/place, marriage date/place, occupation/date/place, residence date/place, notes and picture titles. The search term you enter is used as all lower case during the search eg entering Aldershot or aldershot will obtain the same results.

Note that a straight text search is performed not a word search. So for example searching for 'Eliza' will not only get people called 'Eliza' but also those called 'Elizabeth'. In this example searching for 'Eliza ' ie with a space at the end would narrow the search appropriately. Similarly, searching for "Arthur Albert" will only match that exact phrase, not any entries containing either Arthur or Albert.

Some examples of searches that may be useful are:
1. all people who lived in a particular street
2. all people who lived in a particular country
3. all people with a particular occupation
4. all people who had an event eg birth, marriage etc, in a particular year

I think some of the information is private, how do I get it removed?

I have only included information that is either already publicly available or has been provided by the person concerned or their direct descendant. However if you think that a mistake has been made and some information should not have been included, please contact me.

What facilities are available within the details page for an individual?

Most of the information is self explanatory eg birth date and place. The occupations and residences information can be displayed by clicking on the '+' beside each to expand the detail. Similarly clicking on the '-' will hide the information.

Clicking on a location eg birth place, will display a map showing the location, which can be dragged around the screen by clicking and dragging the mouse in the header area. Clicking and dragging in the map area moves the displayed map. The initial zoom level of the displayed map depends on the granularity of the available location information eg if just the town is known a map showing the general location of the town is displayed whereas if a location is known to a particular street a detailed map is shown at street level. Obviously the user can subsequently zoom in further, but must always bear in mind the accuracy of the source information when doing this eg zooming down to street level when the location information just identifies the town is meaningless and just shows a randomly picked location somewhere within the confines of the town.

Clicking on the menu item 'Locations Map - this Individual' will display a map showing all known locations for the individual eg to show how an individual moved around the country from birth to death or emigrated from one country to another. Hover the mouse over a marker to see details of what event occurred at that location.

Clicking on the individual's parents, siblings, spouse or spouse's parents will display the details page for that individual.

Clicking on a thumbnail image will display the full size image overlaid on the details page. The remainder of the images can either be displayed by closing the overlay and clicking on another thumbnail or the left/right arrow buttons can be used to cycle through all images for the individual. To zoom in/out of the image, eg to better read text, use the mousewheel. Note that the images displayed are a combination of the images for both the individual and spouse, if any.

Clicking on the menu item 'Pedigree Chart - this Individual' will display a chart showing the male ancestor line for the individual. If the chart is larger than the display area, the mouse can be used to drag the chart around to show all areas. The chart for a particular child of the individual can be displayed by clicking on the left arrow (if present) which will show a list of children. Clicking on a child's name will display the pedigree chart for that child. Spouses are shown for individuals on the chart and if ancestor information for these is known, a right arrow is displayed and clicking on this will display the pedigree chart for that spouse. Click on a name within a chart box to display the details for that individual.

Clicking on the menu item 'Descendants Chart - this Individual' will display a chart showing all of the descendants, their spouses and children, and their descendants, repeated for each branch until no more children are found. Note that in some cases the resulting chart can be very large and the mouse can be used to drag the chart around to show all areas.

How do I display details for a person knowing their name?

Click on the menu item 'name List'. This will display a list of all known names. If there is more than one person with a particular surname, click on the '+' to expand the list. If possible check that the correct person has been identified by looking at the summary information eg birth date and place etc. Click on the person's name to open up the details page for that person.

How do I find all Boramans in a particular country?

Click on the menu item 'Locations Map - All Boramans'. This will show a world map with details of where Boramans have been identified. Where a person symbol has a number within it, this is the total number of people within the immediate area. Clicking on a symbol will zoom in further into that area. Where an individual is located without any other Boramans in the immediate vicinity, a person symbol is displayed without numbers. Clicking on such a person symbol will display the details for that person.

Note that the location for an individual on the world map is taken from the following list of events, in order of availability:
1.Birth place
2. First residence
3. First occupation place
4. Death place

How do I print a page?

Use your browser's normal print facility eg File-Print. A print specific version will be produced eg without the menu items and with reduced background colours. In some cases eg descendants charts, the resulting print will be larger than A4 and will either need printing to a larger size paper eg A0 or, if your printer supports it, using the tile print facility where the printout is split across multiple A4 pages which can then be taped together.
